Leila Shahid… We mourn your passing, Palestine mourns your passing The Palestinian Ambassador Who Strengthened Palestine’s Cultural Presence in Paris and Opened Space for Artists from the Homeland and the Diaspora.

With the passing of Leila Shahid, Palestine loses not only a distinguished diplomat but also a remarkable cultural advocate who believed that art is an integral part of the struggle for existence. She understood that the Palestinian narrative is not conveyed through politics alone, but is also painted, composed, and expressed across major cultural platforms around the world.
Among the milestones that will continue to reflect her vision is the story of the Palestinian studio at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris. When a rare opportunity emerged to secure a permanent studio for Palestine within this renowned international artistic institution, Leila Shahid moved swiftly and with conviction. She recognized that Palestine’s presence in such a global cultural space was not a luxury, but a symbolic, artistic, and moral necessity.
She reached out to the late Edward Said, who brought the proposal to a meeting of the Board of Trustees of Taawon. Within a short time, the decision was made: Taawon would support the leasing of the studio for Palestinian artists.
Thus, the “Edward Said Studio” in Paris was born, marking a significant chapter in Palestinian cultural partnership.
In 1999, a partnership was launched between Taawon and the Cité internationale des arts to operate the studio for Palestinian visual artists. In 2004, the partnership expanded locally to include the A.M. Qattan Foundation, the Palestinian Ministry of Culture, and the French Consulate General in Jerusalem, forming a sustainable collaborative model to support Palestinian creativity.
Since then, the studio has become a temporary creative space and incubator for dozens of Palestinian artists from the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem, and the diaspora. It has served as a place for creation, reflection, and dialogue, where artists come together through their shared passion for art and their commitment to telling Palestine’s story through artistic expression.
Through this initiative, Palestinian artists have had the opportunity to reside in the heart of Paris, within a vibrant community of more than 300 artists from around the world. They return with enriched experiences and new perspectives that contribute to the development of the Palestinian cultural landscape and strengthen Palestine’s presence within the global art scene.
Leila Shahid was not only an ambassador in political capitals; she was also an ambassador for young artists and for the small dreams that need belief and support to flourish. She understood that investing in culture is an investment in dignity, and that safeguarding identity requires nurturing talent and opening horizons for it to grow.
Today, whenever a Palestinian artist travels to Paris carrying a suitcase, a creative project, and a dream, a trace of Leila Shahid accompanies that journey. Through her determination and belief, she opened a window in the name of Palestine-one that remains open, allowing Palestine to speak to the world in the language of creativity.
May Leila Shahid rest in peace-she believed deeply that Palestine deserves its place in the world, and she worked to ensure that it would also have a lasting presence in the capital of art, and a space where Palestinians abroad can gather around their memory, identity, and shared dreams.
