Farmers in North Gaza have long sustained the region's agricultural backbone, cultivating land, managing water resources, and maintaining local food supply chains despite successive disruptions. Building on this existing capacity, Taawon continues its longstanding work to strengthen Palestinian resilience by supporting agricultural livelihoods, community resilience, and food security across the region. As part of this sustained institutional engagement, Taawon is supporting the implementation of a six-month agricultural recovery intervention in partnership with Beit Lahia Development Association (BLDA), the implementing partner on the ground.
The project, “Agricultural Recovery and Irrigation Rehabilitation for Farmers in Gaza – Roots of Resilience,” is funded by Danish Muslim Aid (DM-Aid). Taawon serves as the lead implementing partner, with Beit Lahia Development Association (BLDA) responsible for on-the-ground delivery. The intervention will be implemented across Beit Lahia, Aslan, Bir Al-Naja, and Al-Tawam.
Over a six-month period, the project will rehabilitate 100 dunums of agricultural land, repair and rehabilitate irrigation networks, and support the operation of 25 agricultural water wells to improve irrigation access. Farmers will apply customized agricultural input packages based on the assessed needs of their individual plots, enabling them to restore productive capacity on land they have already been working.
Ten households will establish home gardens as part of their own recovery, producing food for household consumption and building practical agricultural skills. Twenty-five local laborers will contribute to rehabilitation activities through cash-for-work opportunities, bringing direct local knowledge and labor to the restoration of agricultural infrastructure. These activities frame local actors and residents as active participants in their own recovery, applying their existing knowledge and labor to rebuild productive capacity.
By restoring productive capacity and irrigation access, the project supports farmers in rebuilding stable incomes and working towards self-reliance over time, rather than providing one-time emergency relief. The rehabilitation of irrigation infrastructure also strengthens preparedness for future agricultural disruptions in the region. This intervention is part of Taawon's wider work across North Gaza, which spans long-term agricultural development, community resilience, and emergency response. The current project builds on existing agricultural and livelihood programs in the region, connecting immediate recovery to Taawon's sustained institutional commitment to Palestinian resilience.
Taawon responds to urgent needs while sustaining its longer-term work to strengthen Palestinian resilience. This project reflects that wider mission: restoring agricultural livelihoods, enabling affected households to gradually resume their productive activities, and contributing to early recovery in North Gaza as part of Taawon's continued investment in people, resilient communities, and humanitarian support across the full continuum of development and relief.
